A coolant temperature sensor also known as an ECT sensor or ECTS, is an engine management system sensor. Coolant temperature sensors are used to monitor the temperature of the engine's coolant. A functional coolant temperature sensor prevents the vehicle from using more gas than necessary and also ensures a safer ride. Coolant temperature sensors work based on the principle of temperature-dependent electrical resistance. As the coolant temperature changes, the resistance of the sensor changes accordingly. This change in resistance is converted into a voltage or digital signal that is sent to the ECU for processing. The coolant temperature sensor's readings are vital for the engine management system to adjust fuel delivery and ignition timing
