About Intraoperative Radiation Therapy
Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is an intensive radiation treatment that's administered into the surgical cavity at the time of the surgical removal of cancer. This therapy is used to treat cancers that are difficult to remove during surgery and when there is a concern that microscopic amounts of cancer may remain after the surgery. For IORT special type of radiation therapy machine is used that is capable of delivering the required radiation dose during the surgical procedure. Intraoperative radiation therapy is only appropriate for certain older and lower-risk breast cancer patients. It is estimated that about 43,600 women in the United States are expected to die in 2021 from breast cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among United States women.
