A GIS substation is a high-voltage substation in which the main structures are enclosed in a sealed environment and the insulating medium is sulphur hexafluoride gas. Gas insulated switchgears (GISs) are used as substation and receiving equipment to ensure a safe and reliable electrical supply. Circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing devices, and other electrical components are encased and kept in metal canisters that are filled with a high-insulation-performance gas. As a result, the equipment is small, dependable, and secure. For phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground insulation, a GIS Substation uses a better dielectric gas, SF6, at moderate pressure.
