The correct working and survival of the circuits operating within racks and enclosures is dependent on maintaining the temperature inside them. Traditional data centre thermal management systems were put under a lot of strain as server power dissipation time increased. Traditional systems use computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units to pressurise a raised floor plenum with cool air, which is then circulated throughout the raised floor via ventilation tiles. The temperature of the CRAC units' hot air return away from the equipment racks is routinely adjusted. Passive and active rack thermal management are two techniques to ensuring a sufficient interior enclosure temperature for the successful operation of the components contained. Passive ventilation relies on a correctly configured system's ability to ventilate via natural convection. In order to scale to serve cloud, big data IT, and new data-intensive technologies, high-density data centres will be needed to accommodate the rapid expansion in data demand.
