The advantage that mid-motors have over hub motors is their gear ratio. They allow the rider to power the rear wheel with the same chain and gear set that powers the pedals, allowing a low gear to be selected for powering up steep hills or accelerating from a stop with massive torque. A mid-drive motor in low gear can climb steeper hills than a hub motor of comparable power, and it can climb hills for a longer period of time than a hub motor, which can overheat on long steep hill climbs. A mid-drive motor is also typically smaller and lighter than a comparable power hub motor. Mid-drive motors that are smaller and lighter are often more discrete because they can be integrated directly into the bicycle frame.

In February 2021, MAHLE has taken over the air conditioning business in Japan, Thailand, and the USA from the former Keihin Corporation (now Hitachi Astemo, Ltd.). The antitrust authorities have given their approval. Four production sites and one development center are now being integrated into the MAHLE Group. In May 2022, MAHLE successfully launched the production of its new X20 traction motor for e-bikes at its site in Šempeter pri Gorici, Slovenia. Around 20 employees are currently producing the new drive on the assembly line commissioned just this year. The first deliveries to customers have already been made. The X20 will secure sales growth in the mid-double-digit million range for the site in the coming years. With a system weight of fewer than 3.2 kilograms, including the battery and control unit, the X20 is the lightest e-bike drive available on the market. The new product was developed by MAHLE Smartbike Systems in Palencia/Spain.
The federal speed limit for eBikes is 20 miles per hour or less under motor power alone. The tiered classification system, adopted by many states, also specifies this speed limit. That classification sets 20 miles per hour as the legal limit for Class 1 & 2 bikes.
