Any of a group of hydrated double salts, typically made of aluminum sulfate, hydration water, and the sulfate of another element, is called alum. By combining the sulfate of a singly charged cation with the sulfate of any one of several triply charged cations, a whole series of hydrated double salts are produced. The sulfates of potassium, sodium, ammonium, cesium, and other elements and compounds can be combined with aluminum sulfate to form alums. Similar to how iron, chromium, manganese, cobalt, and other metals' triply charged cations can replace aluminium sulfate, so can other metals.
