About Kidney Transplant
A kidney transplant replaces a functioning kidney in a recipient with a diseased or failing kidney using a healthy kidney from a donor. Typically, this procedure is carried out on patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), where its kidneys can no longer filter waste and excess fluid from his or her blood. The deceased donor and living donor will usually be related to the recipient or compatible matches. The surgery itself involves placing the new kidney in the lower abdomen and connecting it to the vessels and bladder in the recipient. The recipient's diseased kidneys are almost always left in place unless they are obstructive. After the transplant, the person will need to be on immunosuppressant medications for life to avoid rejection of the new kidney. While not a cure, a successful kidney transplant can help a person enjoy a much-enhanced quality of life and increased longevity when compared with long-term dialysis.
