About Sand Battery
A sand battery is a new form of thermal energy storage technology employing sand as a storage material. It operates through heating sand up to very high temperatures (several hundred degrees Celsius) via electricity produced by renewable sources such as solar and wind. Subsequently, this heat is trapped in the sand because of the good heat-retaining capacity of sand. When there is a requirement for energy, the contained heat can be reclaimed by passing air or a heat transfer fluid over the sand, and such heat can then be utilized in applications ranging from district heating to industrial process heat or even electricity through a heat engine and generator. This technology has some benefits, such as the availability and affordability of sand at low costs, being safe and non-toxic, and having the capacity to store energy for long durations, such as for weeks or months. Sand batteries can offset the intermittence of renewable energy sources by storing energy when production is surplus and releasing energy when there is high demand or low production. Although in its infancy phase of commercialization, the sand battery is a promising and inexpensive means to store large-scale thermal energy towards a greener energy future. Energy density and heat loss are challenges being pursued through research and development.
