Scope of the Study

Fucoxanthin is a xanthophyll found as an accessory pigment in the chloroplasts of brown algae and most other heterokonts, giving them a brown or olive-green color. It can be isolated from edible brown seaweeds. Recent studies showed that fucoxanthin has many physiological functions and biological properties such as antiobesity, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammatory as well as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular protective effects. It can be used as both medicinal and nutritional purposes. Fucoxanthin is a marine carotenoid and mainly present in the microalgae and macroalgae such as Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame), Laminaria japonica (Ma-Kombu), Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Cylindrotheca closterium.
