Global MicroRNA Consumables Market Overview:
A microRNA consumable (abbreviated miRNA) is a small single-stranded non-coding RNA molecule found in plants, animals, and some viruses that functions in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional gene expression regulation. MiRNAs work by pairing with complementary sequences in mRNA molecules. As a result, these mRNA molecules are silenced by one or more of the following processes: mRNA strand cleavage into two pieces; mRNA destabilization via shortening of its poly tail; and less efficient translation of the mRNA into proteins by ribosomes. MiRNAs are similar to small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) from the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, except that miRNAs are derived from RNA transcripts that fold back on themselves to form short hairpins, whereas siRNAs are derived from longer double-stranded RNA regions. The human genome may contain over 1900 miRNAs, though newer research suggests that the figure is closer to 2,300. However, in the manually curated miRNA gene database MirGeneDB, only about 500 human microRNAs are genuine microRNAs.

Kim is engaged in the regulation of microRNA function. Untemplated nucleotides, usually A or U, are added to the 3' end or tail of a small percentage of microRNAs. Tailing can change the function of microRNAs and, in some cases, act as a molecular switch, resulting in developmental and pathological changes. Kim's lab was curious about whether tailing occurs on other RNAs, such as mRNA. They devised a novel method for sequencing mRNA's 3' tail region, allowing them to measure polyA tail length and detect 3' terminal modifications. They discovered widespread uridylation of mRNAs and demonstrated that the 3' PolyU modification serves to mark mRNAs for decay.
